During a recent trip to London, Edison Arantes do Nascimento, better known to the footballing world as Pelé, gave an exclusive interview to Jose Maria Rodriguez of the Madrid sports daily, Marca. The interview took place at Pelé's hotel at Covent Garden.

Pelé discussed the following topics:

* The Spanish national team
* Santos Futebol Clube
* The upcoming FIFA Club World Cup
* Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
* Real Madrid

PREGUNTA. Parece obligado preguntarle para empezar por la selección española. ¿Qué es lo que más le atrae de ella?
RESPUESTA. Naturalmente es la referencia mundial hoy por hoy. Para los que nos gusta el fútbol de más alta calidad sin lugar a dudas el juego que practica hoy por hoy España es superior al resto. Es la referencia mundial. Me encanta que actúe como un equipo. No es de un solo jugador, es una selección que tiene un conjunto y que sabe qué hacer, cómo atacar y cómo defender. El equipo de Brasil del 70 tenía el mismo tipo de juego, los futbolistas se conocían, estaban preparados y no encontraba muchas dificultades para jugar. Los toques de bola, la técnica, era todo dominado por ese equipo. España es un poco eso. Por eso me encanta como se desenvuelve la selección campeona del mundo.

It seems necessary to ask you to begin with the Spanish national team. What attracts you the most about this side?

Naturally, it is the global talking point these days. For those of us who like football at the highest quality, without a doubt, the play that Spain practices these days is above that of the rest. It is the global reference. It delights me how they move as a team. It's not only one player. It's a team that has a group that knows what it wants to do, such as attack and defend. The Brazilian team of 1970 had the same type of play. The players knew each other, were prepared and we didn't encounter many difficulties in playing. The touches of the ball, the technique, was completely dominated by that team. Spain is a little like that. For me, it is delightful how they have become the world champion.

P. ¿Es lo más parecido que ha visto usted al Brasil del 70?
R. Creo que sí. Lo que pasa es que la del 70 estuvo como ocho años jugando junta, y ésta acaba de empezar como quien dice. Su recorrido es todavía corto, acaba de empezar. Pero de lo que vimos hasta ahora, técnicamente, es sin ninguna duda lo más parecido al Brasil del 70. Es fantástica.

Is it the closest side that you have seen compared to Brazil 1970?

I believe so. What happened is that the 1970 team had played together for 8 years and Spain is just starting out as some say. Its journey is still short having just begun. But for what we have experienced up until now, technically, it is without a doubt the closest to Brazil in 1970. It's a fantastic team.

P. Dijo Del Bosque en una ocasión que si volviera a ser jugador sería Sergio Busquets. ¿En qué jugador de la selección le gustaría reencarnarse a Pelé?
R. [Risas]Si pudiera, me gustaría ser Xavi. Creo que hace el papel que yo hacía. Viene de atrás, llega al remate, hace el papel que yo hacía. La gente cree que yo era el delantero centro, el último punta, pero era el tercero en el ataque de Brasil. El tercer hombre, fíjese. Pero lo más importante es jugar en equipo.

It was said that Vicente Del Bosque one time declared that if he came back as a footballer, it would be as Sergio Busquets. What player on the Spanish team would you like to be reincarnated as?

(He laughs.) If I could, I'd like to be Xavi. I believe that he accomplishes what I did. He comes from the back and takes shots. He does what I did. People believe that I was a center forward. The last striker. But I was the third in the attack of Brazil. The third man, fixed. But the most important thing is how the team plays.

P. ¿Firmaría una final Brasil-España en Maracaná dentro de tres años en el próximo Mundial?
R. Por supuesto, luego que cada uno juegue sus bazas y que quien mejor fútbol practique se lleve el título. Sabemos que ustedes van a por la segunda estrella, pero si creen que nosotros nos vamos a conformar con las cinco que tenemos, están equivocados.

Would you like to see a World Cup final in 2014 at the Maracana between Brazil and Spain?

Of course. Each one who plays plays his cards right and who plays the best football will take the title. We know that you (Spanish) are going for the second star on your shirts but you believe that we are going to settle for the five that we have, all things being equal.

P. Todo apunta a que en el próximo Mundialito de clubes se enfrentarán Santos y Barcelona, escuela brasileña contra escuela española. Suena excelente, ¿no?
R. Nosotros tenemos claro que el Barça tiene un equipo con mucha más experiencia, y en sus filas cuenta con más de ocho jugadores de la selección española. Ahora bien, el Santos tiene cuatro o cinco jugadores de gran calidad: Neymar, el mismo Ganso, aunque veremos si se recupera porque ahora está lesionado. Es un torneo propicio para las sorpresas. Fíjese en el Inter de Porto Alegre hace apenas dos años, llegó como mejor equipo de Brasil y gran favorito y ni siquiera pudo empezar la final. Eso sí, espero que la final sea Santos-Barça. Allá nos vemos.

Everything is pointing at the next World Club Cup where Santos and Barcelona will play, the Brazilian school of thought versus the Spanish one. It's an excellent dream match up, right?

We know that Barcelona has a more experienced side and on its books has eight Spanish team players. Santos has four or five players of great quality. Neymar, the same for Ganso, we'll see if he can recover in time because now he is injured. It is a favorable tournament for surprises. Look at Internacional of Porto Alegre two years ago. They arrived as the best Brazilian team and the great favorite and couldn't even reach the final. Yes, I hope that the final will be between Santos and Barcelona. We'll see then.

P. Háblenos de Neymar. ¿Tan bueno es?
R. Es excepcional. Yo soy santista de corazón, así que si yo lo que quiero es lo mejor para mi club, ¿cómo voy a querer que salga Neymar de Santos? Tenemos también a Danilo, que juega por la derecha, excelente, actuó en la sub 20. El Santos está formando un gran equipo, joven. Yo prefiero que se quede ahí.

Let's talk about Neymar. How good is he?

He is exceptional. I'm a Santos supporter to the core and I always want what is best for my club. How will I feel if Neymar leaves Santos? We still have Danilo who plays on the right side, is excellent, and was selected for the Under 20 team. Santos is putting together a great team. A young side. I prefer that Neymar stays there.

P. ¿Quién cree que se lo va a llevar finalmente, el Real Madrid o el Barcelona?
R. No tengo ni idea de si se lo va a llevar el Madrid o el Barcelona, pero lo que está claro es mi deseo: no quiero que se vaya. Si yo pudiera escoger, querría que fuera como yo, que jugué toda mi carrera en el Santos, salvo los tres últimos años cuando me marché al Cosmos.

Who do you think will finally sign him, Real Madrid or Barcelona?

I don't have any idea if he'll end up at Madrid or Barcelona. But what is clear is my wish: I don't want him to leave. If I could chose, it would be as I, who played my entire career with Santos except the last three years when the New York Cosmos signed me.

P. ¿Le ha enviado ya el vídeo de 'Eterno Pelé' a Messi, tal y como ha prometido?
R. Todavía no, pero se lo voy a mandar. Dé por seguro que lo voy a hacer.

Did you send the video of "Eternal Pelé" to Messi as you had promised?

Not yet. But I'm going to send it. Certainly, I'm going to do it.

P. ¿Cómo ve a Messi?
R. Muy bien, es un jugador excelente, pero creo que aún es pronto para compararlo con Pelé. Mire, desde que empecé a jugar, se compara a futbolistas conmigo. A Di Stéfano, después a Sívori, a Beckenbauer, a Platini, a Maradona. Algo tiene Pelé cuando todo el mundo trata de encontrarle un sucesor. Messi es fantástico y tiene unas características especiales. Tengamos paciencia.

How do you see Messi?

Very well. He's an excellent player but I believe that it is too soon to compare him with Pelé. Look, since when I began to play, players are compared to me. Alfredo Di Stefano, afterwards Omar Sivori, to Franz Beckenbauer, to Michel Platini, to Diego Maradona. Something has Pelé when the whole world tries to find his successor. Messi is fantastic and has special characteristics. Let's have some patience.

P. Habla antes del duelo entre usted y Di Stéfano. ¿El de Cristiano Ronaldo y Messi es algo parecido?
R. Para nada. Son futbolistas completamente diferentes. Messi es más técnico, tiene otro tipo de juego, participa más en el fútbol, entra desde atrás. Cristiano es más de fuerza, de llegada, de pegada. No creo que se les pueda comparar.

You talk of the duel between you and Di Stéfano. Is Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi comparable?

No way. They are completely differerent footballers. Messi is more technical. He has another style of play. He plays more with the ball and comes in from behind. Cristiano is more powerful in how he comes in and strikes (the ball). I don't believe that you can compare them.

P. ¿Le daría el Balón de Oro a Messi?
R. Se lo daría a Neymar, es el mejor. Ha hecho una temporada fantástica.

Would you give the Balon de Or to Messi?

I would give it to Neymar. He is the best. He had a fantastic season.

P. ¿Le gusta cómo funciona el Madrid en esta etapa de Mourinho?
R. Me gusta Mourinho, claro, como entrenador. Luego también hay que tener suerte y disponer de un buen equipo a tus órdenes. Eso es importante.

Do you like how Real Madrid plays in this era of Mourinho?

I like Mourinho, surely, as a manager. He needs to also have luck and to arrange a good side by his wishes. That is important.

P. ¿Y del equipo?
R. Me gusta el Real Madrid, tiene fuerza. El problema creo que fue la lesión de Kaká. Estaba muy bien, creciendo, pero ese parón tan largo le cortó la progresión en un nuevo entorno. Apuntaba un equipo temible, con Cristiano Ronaldo delante y Kaká por detrás. Pero por el momento no da para hacer una comparación con el Barcelona. Todavía me parece un equipo mucho más completo.

And the team?

I like Real Madrid. It's a strong side. I believe the problem was the injury to Kaká. He was doing well, growing, but that very long absence shortened his progression in the new environment. It pointed to a fearful side with Cristiano Ronaldo up front and Kaká behind him. But for now, I don't make a comparison with Barcelona who still seems to me to be a more complete side.

P. ¿Ve a alguien capaz de marcar 1.000 goles como logró usted en su carrera?
R. Me parece un poco difícil, primero tiene que saber hacer goles de cabeza con cierta asiduidad. Hay jugadores como Messi que es más centrocampista, se ha reconvertido en generador de juego además de en finalizador. Y que conste que yo no tiraba los penaltis. Los lanzadores eran Carlos Alberto en la Seleçao y Pepe en el Santos. Lo más importante es que el jugador sea completo. Con la derecha, con la izquierda, con la cabeza. Ése es el problema de Messi. Él no es completo en el juego aéreo. Es un problema.

Do you seen anyone capable of scoring 1,000 goals as you did in your career?

It seems to me a little difficult. First, you have to be able to score goals with your head with a certain frequency. There are players such as Messi who is more of a midfielder who was converted from a creator of plays to a finisher. And like I who also didn't take spot kicks. The specialists were Carlos Alberto on the Brazilian national team and Pepe with Santos. The most important thing is that the player is complete. With the right foot, with the left foot, with the head. That is the problem of Messi. He is not complete in the air. It's a problem.
