The Politics and Risk of a Failed Legacy in Brazil

As the World Cup unfolds in Brazil questions persist about whether the protest movement from the 2013 Confederations Cup could engulf the World Cup tournament as a number of forces and realities have gripped the nation of Brazil in the wake of unkept promises, a soon to be resolved election and the potential for a failed legacy appear on the horizon. Anto is joined by Christopher Gaffney of Hunting White Elephants to evaluate the ongoing struggle as the matches unfold and how all sides appear to be engaged in a battle with many factors including football, politics, social justice and the national economic reality that could affect Brazil for generations to come. We discuss how security forces have aligned themselves, the number of protest movements and influences behind them and whether the national sporting pastime is now in the crosshairs. We discuss the nightmare scenario that is posed when protest zones are not used and fans could be exposed to that security risk, a protest movement that operates at very different frequencies and how this World Cup could alter the fan experience for a club football infrastructure that has not modernized, choosing instead to insulate itself with untold riches of stadium and infrastructure project that have enriched the elite.
